What have we done?
We just bought a house. It is amazing and gorgeous and probably a lot more than we deserve. Certainly more than we need right now, but we plan to stay there until all of our kids have their own families and are ready to invite us to live with them.

We got the really big pie-shaped lot on the end of the court. It is more than a half-acre, with woods in the back, including a 25' no-cut zone. I had rejected this lot initially because it looked like one of the other houses would be looking down on its back yard, but now that we can see the actual lot, it turns out that it will be really really private because the back of the house will be sticking into the woods. There is a creek down in the ravine, and we own most of the woods back there (>0.5 acre lot), so no one can take it away. Ever! I'm going to make paths back there so we can walk around in the woods without pushing through brush.

We'll have tree rats (squirrels), which I adore, and deer, and birds, and wilderness (in the middle of a well-manicured golf course). I just hope we don't regret not having an actual back lawn to play volleyball on and such. I think that will be more than made up for by the swath of wilderness in our backyard that both of us were craving.

I'm a little stunned right now, and experiencing much less buyer's remorse than one would expect. We've have several months to think about it since we put the deposit down on the lot, and we've gotten to take a lot of people through it. Everyone has claimed to like it a lot, and it does have a lot of really cool features. Some of my favorites:

  • two staircases (I don't know why, but this is just cool... it will be more work for babyproofing, but still just cool)
  • big gourmet kitchen that is open to the family room
  • morning room with lots of windows looking out into trees trees and more trees
  • amazing master suite with a sitting room, two huge walk in closets, a big tub and a stand up shower with a seat, and the toilet is in its own tiny little room! What a great idea!
  • two bay windows in the dining room
  • a study on the first floor
  • big play room upstairs
  • first floor laundry room
  • walk out basement
  • the address
  • it is closer to Travis's work (cutting his 'commute' from 8 minutes to about 5)

    Things I'm concerned about:
  • that it is too nice for us
  • that it is too big for us
  • babyproofing both the stairways
  • the left turn onto the big road at the top of a hill
  • slightly farther from the highway entrance
  • slightly farther from the grocery store
  • that I'll go crazy deciding on options

Things we are still waffling about, opinions are welcome:
  • extra bathroom over the foyer - this closes the foyer off so it isn't so open and grand, but it gives us an extra bathroom upstairs (for a total of three)
  • hardwood floors in the entry - we are considering just using the same linoleum (armstrong resilient) that is in the kitchen and hallway
  • transom window over the fireplace - it looks cool in pictures
  • an extra window in each kids' bedrooms, so there would be a window on each external wall (two in each room)
  • light or dark cabinetry
