We got to go through the house with Keith this morning and see what it looks like all framed up. Here are the highlights:
He had made a slight measuring error before the house was built, and had told us that we could have a 5828 window (5 feet, 8 inches by 2 feet, 8 inches) in the basement, but really all that will fit is a 4828. He feels bad about that, and due to his grievous error, has already gone ahead and ordered two more windows for us, which he'll be installing for free. That completely and totally rocks, because we wanted more windows down there, anyway, and were planning on begging for them, but now we don't have to.
There are still a few more windows we would put in if we could, but he says it is too late, and we just need to live with that. We can't have everything, and already the house is essentially made of glass.
The bonus room is absolutely perfect. It is gorgeous and great and will be a wonderful playroom (for all of us - tv, computers, treadmill, toys, etc). It does not make the family room feel small (having a non-cathedral ceiling instead of a cathedral ceiling), and it is infinitely more useful than a cathedral ceiling. Because cathedral ceilings have no function.
The bathroom over the foyer does not seem to make the foyer feel closed in. It is hard to tell because the walls have no drywall on them, so we can't tell how dark the foyer will be without that light. In any case, again, the bathroom is infinitely more useful than no bathroom.
The radon pipe had been removed by the cement guys, who thought they were doing Keith a favor. He noticed their mistake the next day and had to have them drill out the hole for the pipe. It is all fine now.
He says that the stove vent looks like it can shoot through the ceiling of the dining room, rather than pushing the wall out, which they had told us they had to do. So, we'll have a real stove vent without losing dining room space. Excellent! I'm glad that they were pessimistic about how much space it would take, because now we're thrilled.
It was very interesting walkthrough, and we took lots of pictures. It was fun to be in the house legitimately. The guys were in there working, but we tried not to get in the way.
I just took cookies over to the framing crew. They've been working so hard and so many hours. I'm very impressed.
