Jen's Listening Habits

I love music. I love to listen to it, I love to know about it, I love to play it, and I love to sing itI wish that the minidisc had become the standard, because my collection of cds takes up so much space!

I basically listen to two kinds of music. Accordingly, I have two pages, one for each. Lately I've been on a female vocalists trend. Lately being the past five years or so. This has merged into a folk and celtic music trend. I leased a car that has a 6-cd changer in the trunk. To save energy, I've been burning compilation cds to keep in the changer at all times. I've put those playlists here, too.

Guitar

I started playing guitar about six years ago, but I gave it up for a while for no good reason. Scott taught me how to play on his wonderful Les Paul with the low low action. My first song was "Jane Says" by Jane's Addiction, then "Smells Like Teen Spirit". Hey, it's an easy song. He made me play scales and learn the technique, too, not just learn how to play tab. I'm glad, because now I'm very versatile.

Another thing that Scott made me do as part of the learning process was figure out how to play songs by listening to them. I got to be pretty good at it. Then I discovered OLGA. Now I'm lazy. Bad me. I did figure one song out and I even bothered to html-ize it. Here you go, here is You're Aging Well by Dar Williams. Oh. Scott helped a bit. :->

For my first few years of playing, I played rock and heavy metal, like Metallica, Spinal Tap, Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More, Black Sabbath, Ozzy... you know, the classics. That was great fun. I had the Les Paul, and I bought a little Pig Node amp. So darn cute.

I have a 12-string Seagull acoustic. I love it. It has beautiful action and a rich, full, sound. I didn't intend to buy a 12-string, but I played it and it was so gorgeous. I fell in love with it. Of course, I still had Scott play it to ensure that it was a good guitar. He approved and barely let me take it away with me.

Mostly I play folk stuff, now. Call me an old fogey. I try to play stuff I can sing to. Singing and playing at the same time is a new talent for me, so I'm loving it. My friend Mike taught me how to strum, something Scott had tried to teach me, but I just was too poor a player then to understand. Finally I got it. Playing is much more fun now.

Voice

I love to sing. I sing along in the car, though I never sing in the shower. I only took voice lessons for a short time, though I've been in choir a few times. I'm not tone deaf, of that I'm pretty certain (though you can't be sure that people aren't lying to you), but my voice is nothing special. It is a very folky voice, which is good because I mostly play folk musicI love musicals, and I'd love to be in one (community theatre only, of course), but I really need to be able to sing better first. Of course, there is the whole acting thing, too, but I'll deal with that later.
