How did we end up with the name Katherine Sherilyn White Doom, aka Kayli?

Kayli

We had both liked the name Kayli. We had decided against it because it is a 'new' name, rather than a classic, which I prefer. Then, Travis came home from King's Island one day and said definitively, "I really like the name Kayli. If you don't, then I'm going to make sure you're drugged up after the birth, then I'm going to fill out the birth certificate while you're out. I like it a lot." He was kidding about the drugging and the going behind my back part, of course, but I loved it that he had such a strong opinion.

Sure, there are a couple of negatives to the name. It is pretty popular right now. Some might say 'trendy'. I mentioned that to Travis and he laughed at me and said, 'when did we ever care what anyone else thought?' Good point, why avoid a name that we love just because other people also like it.

There are several different spellings of it, and 'Kayli' is not the most common ('Kaylee' is). That's inconvenient. Ah well. It isn't a long one to spell out.

Umm... yes, we recognize that it is another 'Joss name'. Can we help it if he uses names that we like? Very few people in the world will make the connection (most of our friends will, of course, because we are geeks with geek friends). If you don't know who Joss is, you can ignore this comment.

Katherine

I tried to figure out how to make Kayli work as a 'real' name. Kayli is pretty cute... could a supreme court justice be named Kayli? I could see Kayla, which is lovely, but not quite classic enough for me. We considered Callista, which is a name that I've always loved, but it is pretty uncommon, so would be a pain to explain/spell. Then, when reading Holly's baby name book, I saw that Kayla and Kayli are modern versions of the name Katherine. Perfect! An justified excuse to use the nick name that we want, but have a classic full name that she could use when she's an adult if she doesn't want such an adorable name as Kayli.

I love the sound of Katherine Doom, and I love many other nicknames associated with it. Particularly Kate. I love that name. So, if she gets tired of Kayli, she has lots of options. Notice that we gave Xander lots of options, too.

Katherine goes well with Alexander, too. They are both classical Greek names; Katherine is one of the oldest known names. Both of our kids are 'great', too. Katherine the Great and Alexander the Great.

I hadn't considered the fact that there were so many different spellings of the name Katherine. I thought I could just say Katherine with a 'K' and that would be good enough. I had forgotten about Katharine (like Hepburn) and Kathryn. Greek names that start with 'C' or 'K' were originally spelled with 'K', and that's what I prefer, anyway. It leads more naturally into 'Kayli', too.

Sherilyn

Sherilyn is a combination of Travis's mom's name (Sheryl) and my mom's name (Lynn). Travis and I came up with that before we were even trying to get pregnant the first time, while driving between Michigan and Ohio. If Xander's ultrasound had revealed him to be a girl, we were going to announce the name as Sherilyn that very day.  Sometime in the past 2.5 years we moved away from it as a first name, but we still like it as a middle name.

If for some reason Kayli doesn't like any of the other nicknames of Katherine, she can be Sheryl, or Lynn, or Sherilyn. Sherilyn is a real name, by the way, though uncommon.  The only person I've seen to have it is the actress Sherilyn Fenn.

White

Kayli has White as a second middle name, as we all do. We each have two middle names, having taken my maiden name as a second middle name.

Doom

I don't think I need to explain Doom. Live up to it, perhaps, but not explain it.
