Tuesday, August 1: My Dad's Camera (Dad's Camera)
Just a few pictures I took with my Dad's big camera. I love the way they turned out! I am considering upgrading to a more powerful camera for my around-the-house use, and keep my point-and-shoot for documenting events.
Tuesday, August 1 - whites1: Visiting Whites - Music and Mall with Kat and Kira
We came up to stay with my parents to celebrate Melissa's birthday. On our first day up here, we went to a music program at the main library. It was very good! Xander had a good time dancing and tapping and egg shaking and scarf waving. Kat and Kira showed up near the end so we had a chance to chat. Then we all went to Briarwood to play in the indoor play area. It is really hot here today, so we needed a break!
Tuesday, August 1 - whites2: Visiting Whites - Mel's Birthday Celebration
Tonight we went out to dinner to celebrate Melissa's birthday with Melissa, Jeff, Teresa, Jack, Becky, and my mom and dad. We went to Knights, a steak restaurant near Becky's house. Xander was SO GOOD all during dinner and the party afterwards. We were so impressed! At dinner, we ran into a blast from my past, idenity to be revealed soon. After dinner, we went over to Becky's house for ice cream cake. Highligts included Xander's circle snuggle, in which he snuggled each person around the table in turn, and the fact that Toonces kept hissing at Xander, which scared him, and eventually he had to ask us to help him get by the cat to the bathroom. Excellent night! Happy Birthday, Mel!
Wednesday, August 2 - whites: Melissa and Xander
Melissa and Xander were playing Zuma together. So cute!
Sunday, August 6: Pool with Raymers
We went to our pool with the Raymers, rather spur of the moment. I do like having a pool so close, though I don't think we have gone often enough to require a membership this year. We swam quite a bit in the gator pool, and the kids played in the playground a bit, but the highlight was probably catching the frog. Xander was SO gentle with the frog. I was very impressed. He also very carefully handed it to Connor so Connor could hold it for a moment. Then, Xander carried it far away from the pool into the woods so it would be safe, and he let it go. Sweet boy!
Monday, August 7: Our Pool on the Deck (Dad's Camera)
We played in our pool on this gorgeous day. Xander had such a good time sliding down his slide into the pool, and splashing around violently, and basically doing anything he could to ensure that no water stayed in the pool. Despite his efforts, there was still water in the pool when Connor, Delia, and Kyle arrived, so Connor had some fun in the pool, too.
Wednesday, August 9: King's Island with the Raymers
We took advantage of summer and flexible schedules to head to King's Island with the Raymers. It was a perfect day for it - not too hot, not too cold, mostly overcast. I got to ride on the Beastie with Xander, which I loved! I'm a rollercoaster fiend, so I was thrilled to get on a rollercoaster again, even if it was just the Beastie instead of the Beast. Xander put his arm around me to protect me. We spent most of our time at the waterpark. Xander has figured out that he can swim with a lifejacket, so he wanted to do that all the time (well, when the waves weren't going).
Friday, August 11: Day Around Home and Kittens!
I took some pictures of the toys and activities that currently fill our days. The kids both like to play "knock down the tower", and of course Xander still loves the vehicles. He's also discovered that knocking his train tracks together is a good percussion instrument. In the pictures in which he's up and down, he was falling over or popping up whenever he saw the flash. That was funny. That evening, we went to see Mike Spehar's new kittens. Xander and Kayli both enjoyed that.
Saturday, August 12 - kayli: Kayli Sleeping
Kayli was sleeping. So I took a picture. Nothing exciting, but she's so cute!
Sunday, August 13: Picnic at the Raymer House
In honor of Loopy's visit, the Raymers had a barbeque. Frank, Loopy, Holly, Tom, Mike, Delia, Travis and I were in attendance, as well as the associated children. Xander held a snake, and did such a good job! He was very gentle with it. Frank gave Kayli an adorable hat that his sister had worn when she was a baby, and she looks very cute in it! Thanks, Frank!
Sunday, August 13 - birthday: Kayli is 9 months old!
Sunday, August 13 - kayli: Kayli in the cradle
Kayli in the cradle that my great-great-great grandfather made. She's also holding my dad's silver rattle.
Monday, August 14 - whites: Xander's second trip to Grandma and Grandpa's
Xander had the chance to go up and spend some time at Grandma and Grandpa's again. I asked him how long he wanted to stay, and he said, "Forty nights!" Well, he got four. He was so excited! I'll meet my dad halfway and pick him up on Friday.
Tuesday, August 15 - kayli: Kayli, Kayli, and more Kayli (Dad's camera)
I was playing with my dad's big camera, and Kayli was being very cute. She had climbed up on Xander's car wash, step by step, and balanced there for a long time. Time enough for a lot of pictures!
Tuesday, August 15 - momsclub: MOMS Club Cooking Club (Dad's camera)
Cooking Club was at my house today. The kids played in the pool and with all of Xander's toys, even though he wasn't here. It was nice! Kayli took at least one witnessed step! She's just about walking!
Wednesday, August 16 - house: Shelves in Master Bath
I finally got around to putting a shelf above my bathtub for my plant, so it is no longer just growing around the tub, making it difficult to clean. About time.
Thursday, August 17 - kayli: Kayli in Pink Butterflies (Dad's camera)
I bought this cute little outfit when Kayli was just days old. She's finally big enough for it, and very cute, too!
Friday, August 18 - whites: Dad returns Xander (Dad's camera)
My dad drove Xander all the way down here so that he could see Kayli for just a little while. He had dinner with us, then he took Xander down to the gully where they found 71 golf balls AND something dead. I didn't take any pictures of the dead thing (possibly an opossum), but I got lots of pictures of the golf balls during the requisite cleaning process.
Sunday, August 20: Playing around the House (Dad's camera)
Just some pictures of my cute kids playing around the house. I had brought my Capsela set from my parents' house, and Xander has discovered that it is very cool. He has built a helicopter, and the propeller (really a wheel) actually spins and everything. Man, I loved Capsela! I wish we hadn't lost the real propeller.
Monday, August 21: Playing with Connor (Dad's camera)
We spent the entire day with Connor and Delia, mostly at the mall, shopping for cold weather clothes, but also a bit at our house. The (napless) toddlers played in the pool and were reasonably well behaved. Then, Delia and I left the kids with their dads so we could have dinner at Logan's with Holly. It was a great time! I think the guys had fun, too, playing at our house.
Tuesday, August 22: Playing in the Pool (Dad's camera)
We spent some time playing in the pool, even though it is pretty cool out. Kayli is wearing a cute orange bikini that I bought her on clearance yesterday. I always thought that bikinis on babies were dumb, until I had my own child with a diaper that must be changed. Now I see the appeal. Oh, and she's cute. She is a water baby. She loves to stand outside the pool and try to grab things in there, or stand inside and just cruise around the outside rim. Xander turned 3 years, 4 months old today. Read all about it in his monthly update!
Wednesday, August 23 - 1: Nature Hike, Lunch, Park with Delia and Connor
We met Delia and Connor (and Kyle) for a spontaneous nature class at the Narrows Reserve. The class was about prairies, and I learned some things, so that was cool. Afterwards, we went to the park and let the kids play. The kids actually played by themselves a lot of the time, leaving me and Delia to chat. Delia found a caterpillar that she gave to Xander, and he brought it home with him. We decided to call it "D11NDozer" because it is a Caterpillar. That's an in joke for those of you who watch Cat Machines videos. We love those videos.
Wednesday, August 23 - 2: Xander's First Trip to the Dentist!
Xander went to the dentist today, for the first time. He was VERY nervous about it, though I'm not sure why. He was actually crying beforehand, saying that he didn't want to go. I asked him why not, and he said, "Because I don't think it will be fun." I'd been telling him about it for days, telling him he'd be going there and what they'd do, and that it would be fun. He always said that he didn't want to go. Anyway. He went, and although he was very apprehensive, he ended up doing great. He sat on my lap at first, in the big chair, then agreed to sit on the big chair by himself. He opened his mouth very wide for the hygenist, and did everything she asked. He was perfect! I was so proud of him for working through his fear and doing it. He's so seldom afraid of anything that he hasn't had much practice with that. He had no cavities, so he got his picture on the Cavity Free Club wall.
Wednesday, August 23 - 3: Gerspacher Park
After the dentist, we went to Gerspacher Park because it was just down the street, and I had promised Xander that we would. The kids both had a great time. I pushed them in the swings for a long time, then some other kids showed up and Xander wanted to show them his caterpillar, so we left the swings. Xander and I explored the woods a little, then he played. Kayli had a great time sliding down the yellow tube slide, then climbing back up. She's very agile!
Friday, August 25 - whites: Spontaneous Party!
It would be a long drive to go directly to Camp from Dayton, so we stopped at my parents' house for the night. It was great, because Travis's parents and my aunt Rebecca came over, too! We had a picnic on the deck outside, everyone got to play with the kids, and we even had cake!
Saturday, August 26 - camp: Camp - Checking in, touring, eating dinner
We got in the car around 10 o'clock and drove drove drove. Xander watched his DVDs until we made him take a nap. Well, Grandma helped with the nap. Cute! Everyone except for my dad and me took the chance for a little snooze. We were worn out from packing, I think. We took the kids on a tour of Camp on the first day. I was shocked by the size of the Nature Center, and pleasantly surprised by the awesome play structures in South and North Camp. Throughout the entire week, Xander wore a hooded sweatshirt that I bought when I was on staff, long before I knew I'd ever have kids, just in case. He looked so cute!
Sunday, August 27 - camp: Camp - 3/4 Nursery, Cookie Man, LeadLine, Skits

We took Xander to the 3/4 Nursery on the first day so that he would get used to the idea of school at Camp. He didn't even hesitate. In the afternoon, we didn't take him to Nursery (we wanted him to nap - ha), but we did meet up with them for Cookie Man. Xander loves the Cookie Man.

My dad and Travis earned their Admirals so they could take us all sailing on an Ensign later in the week. We took Xander to leadline, where he rode Fudge. He enjoyed it, but didn't want to try to get in line again. He was pretty excited about going to the beach with Grandma.

Skits were Sunday night, of course, and they were... well... just as bad as always. And longer, it seemed. The highlight was the Field Sports dancing skit, in my opinion.

Xander spent some time on the beach with my mom, of course. He loves sand.

Sunday evening, Travis and I went out to Hunan. My Cleopatra chicken was still very good, and they have the best Egg Drop Soup. We were pretty rushed, though, because we wanted to make it back in time for skits. We had tried to go to Mitchell Street, but it was closed because it was Sunday. Argh.

Monday, August 28 - camp: Camp - North Beach, Baseball, Climbing Trees, Sing-a-long

I did CPR training during the morning hours. It was excellent! The Red Cross has changed a bunch of things to make it simpler so that more people will be confident using it. Great idea! The nurse was a great instructor, so I really learned everything, I think. The people in the class were nice, too. Very chatty and friendly, of course. This is Camp, after all.

The other 3-year olds in our cabin had a lot of fun at North Beach on Sunday, so we took Xander there, accepting that napping was unlikely with all the excitement of Camp. He had fun splashing around with his lifejacket on. There was contention over shovels because there was only one for entire beach (and all 30 kids). My mom was upset about that. She wanted to bring some over from the 0/2 Nursery, which she did by the end of the week.

In the afternoon, the kids played T-Ball in front of our cabin. They loved that! They all had fun and Xander loved having kids to play with. He later said that T-Ball was his favorite part of Camp. My dad climbed all the way into the Ffarfenophel tree... you can just see him up at the top.

That night was the Sing-a-long at the beach. Xander was VERY tired and could barely lift his arms to make baby sharks. He managed to eat his marshmallow just fine, though. Kayli enjoyed snuggling with Dad, and laughed when he bounced around to the music.

Tuesday, August 29 - camp: Camp - 3/4 Ensign, Hiking, Ensign, Cookie Man, Mitchell Street

I went to see the Nurse again to earn my Infant/Child CPR certification. Kayli came, too. She had heard that it was a class for Infant CPR and misunderstood. She was not very good during the class, but I still got 100% on the very very easy test.

Somehow, they fit 30 3/4 year olds on one Ensign. I don't have pictures of that, but I have pictures of them lining up in their little lifejackets and being ferried out there.

After I saw them off (with plenty of pictures and video), I met my mom for the Tree hike at Nature. I lost interest pretty quickly, having led that hike 13 times during the summer of 2000 and forgotten everything anyway because it just wasn't interesting to me, so Kayli and I just sat in the forest for a while. It was a perfect day to be in the woods.

We made it back in time to meet Xander at Cookie Man, then we went on ANOTHER Ensign ride with our cabinmates, Karen, BJ, Aden, and Jonah. The kids were tired. Xander fell asleep nearly instantly on Grandma, and Kayli fell asleep on me due to heat and irritation that she had to wear a life-jacket. Sailing with infants is really not ideal.

After the Ensign ride, Travis and I got cleaned up and headed out to Mitchell Street Pub! Slightly disappointing, honestly. I swear that they changed the bread. The soup wasn't as good, either. I think TGIFridays makes better soup, now. That's good, because we have one right down the street. Perhaps that's not good. It is expensive and fatty. Eh.

We rushed back from dinner (yes, again) for FAMILY OLYMPICS! My dad and I got to do the Three-Legged Race, which was always OUR event. We would practice all week. We were surprised so we didn't get to practice, but we still did well. We also did the water balloon toss and I got soaked. We did pretty well until then, though!

Wednesday, August 30 - camp: Camp - Adult Trail, Leadline, Archery, Hayride, 0/2 Nursery, Volleyball

The sun was beautiful over the lake as I walked to breakfast in the early morning. It was pretty cool and crisp out. It was a perfect Camp morning. Kayli was very good at sitting in her high chair during meals all week. I'm so glad that we trained her to do that. We never did with Xander, so we just had to hold him all the time.

I stopped by Riding to go on the Adult Trail. That was great! I loved seeing the trails. What a gorgeous job that was, leading all those trails. Dull, yes, but lovely. The 3/4's were there when I was there, so I got some pictures of Xander and his class. I'm was so proud of him. I saw him a few times during his class, and he was never upset when I left him. He's growing up. My dad and Travis played some tennis and I happened to be riding by the South Upper Courts (where we got engaged!), so I got a shot of them playing as we rode by.

The afternoon was spent lazing around outside the cabin. Kayli discovered my dad's grape sucker, which was hilarious. She would open her mouth first, then dive for the sucker. She loved it.

Leadline again, later in the afternoon. Xander rode Lancelot. Xander was disappointed that he didn't get to ride more, but he accepted it. On our way back from Leadline, we stopped to watch my dad shoot some arrows. Xander helped him retrieve them, and he was very good at it! Xander loves to help. He's looking forward to being 5 so he can try Archery.

That night, Kayli, Xander, and I went on the Hayride. It was short because they had to do two due to the thousands of young children, but that was perfect for us. Afterwards, we played at the 0/2 Nursery for a while. Xander LOVED the sand area there and all of the trucks. One of the trucks wasn't very nice, so none of the other trucks wanted to play with him. See? We're teaching manners all the time! Kayli learned that she can climb stairs and go down a slide, all by herself!

On my way home, I took a couple of pictures of the old phone booth in which I spent so much time during my first summer there. The phone is gone but the memories unfortunately remain.

It was camper vs staff volleyball night, so I caught a few shots of my dad playing volleyball, his favorite activity in the world. He rocks! He was nice enough to let the staff win on their last match of the summer. Those sensitive staffer boys needed the self-esteem boost.

Thursday, August 31 - camp: Low Ropes, Rock Polishing, Puppet Show, Mitchell Street

My mom and I wanted to do low ropes together, so Xander went to school and Travis watched Kayli. We had a pretty good time, though I was not impressed with the Ropes staff, which spoiled it a bit for me. As when I worked there, they seem to be there mostly to hang out, not as much to work. Eh.

After Low Ropes, we headed back to the cabin, quite late, but Travis and Kayli were fine. Lunch was spent playing T-ball and relaxing around the cabin, as usual. Wow, do those boys like T-ball! Xander got better and better all week. When all of the boys were there, they actually played the field and everything. Very cute.

After lunch was the regatta. My dad and Travis competed in Miss Sheila, an Ensign. We watched from North Beach where the 3/4s were playing. My mom elected to take care of Kayli for a while, so I took my chance to polish a rock to give to Holly. Hopefully I'll give it to her before she reads this. Hee!

After the regatta, we went to a puppet show at Nature. I was impressed! It was very good! Xander was pretty entranced, too. After the actual puppet show, the kids stormed behind the couch and took over the puppets, which was pretty funny though disorganized.

Travis and I took our chance to go out to dinner at Mitchell Street again, to see if it would live up to my memories. Despite sub-standard seating (not a nice booth!), the experience was better. The popcorn was appropriately salty, and the French Dip I ordered was very good. The soup was still not as good as I remembered. We had a lot of time, for a change, so after eating my french dip, I ordered a grilled cheese, too, which was better than Monday night. Phew. Memories redeemed!

Thursday night, lots and lots of bridge!
