Sunday, October 1: Working Outside
I've been working outside a lot recently, and the kids love spending all that time outside. Kayli loves to carry shoes around, too, especially when they are very very muddy. You can see my first planting of the tiny pachysandra plants in the last picture.
Monday, October 2: Playing at Raymers' House
We went to storytime in the morning, as usual, then Xander suggested that we go over to Delia's house. I called her and found that Holly was there digging up hostas, so it was an excellent time to visit! Xander was excited about seeing Holly! The Raymers have a beautiful sky chair, which reminds me that we really need to figure out how to put one up at our house.
Thursday, October 5 - house: Japanese Maple Tree - Sango Kaku
I found a beautiful Sango Kaku Japanese Maple tree at Lowe's, and brought it home to put in front of my study window. I've seen a lot of these trees since then, and this is definitely the finest specimen I've seen. It has bright red smooth bark, and bright green leaves.
Saturday, October 7 - whites: Sullivan - Saturday

We headed to Sullivan, Illinois for my great-aunt's 80th birthday party. My parents came down on Friday night so we could leave first thing in the morning on Saturday for our five hour drive. It was quite pleasant, actually. We took some time to have lunch at a nice park we just happened by on the side of the road. My dad and Xander had a great time on the bouncy bridge; Xander was laughing his head off.

We arrived in Sullivan around 3:00 and headed directly to the farm. My mom's cousin Tony, my mom's cousin's husband Roger, and my mom's uncle Paul, were all waiting to take Xander on every one of the huge farm machines. Xander loved it! So did I, actually. It was fascinating to see how enormous those machines are, and to see all of the technology that is currently being employed. My great-uncle started farming a 60 acre farm over 60 years ago with a single open-air tractor, and now he has over 2000 acres and many huge pieces of machinery with air conditioned cabs and GPS systems that drive the machines for them. There are still only three of them farming all that land, though!

We went to dinner at the Old School House that night, which was a delicious buffet. Unfortunately, Kayli was NOT happy, so we had to take turns taking her outside. We hadn't had to do that in a long time. The food was excellent, though, especially the cookies, and it was very nice to see everyone again. Tony, Roseanne, Michael, Jeremy, Anna Jane, Paul, Suzie, Roger, Melissa, Jeff, my mom, my dad, and me and the kids.

Sunday, October 8 - whites: Sullivan - Sunday

Sunday was my great-aunt's birthday party. We got up in the morning at the Holiday Inn Express and moved pretty slowly. I even got to sleep in until 9:00 while my parents took the kids swimming in the pool! There was a fantastic breakfast, too, which I enjoyed even though we had lunch plans.

We went back to Sullivan and met everyone to have lunch at Sisters, which is a lovely little tea shop. The food was delicious. The best part was that Kayli slept through lunch in the sling, so I got to enjoy my food and have conversations with people! How unusual!

We went to the cemetery after that and visited the graves of my grandmother and several other relatives on my mom's side.

After that, we moved into our bed and breakfast (well, really just "bed", there was no food). It is run by the woman who lives in my mom's great-aunt Emma's house. She came over to check us in, and was kind enough to invite us over to see the house. After that, we had just a few minutes to nurse Kayli and relax for a few minutes before we headed out to the party at the Sullivan Country Club.

The party was very nice! Everyone that I met there was so friendly and nice, and they were all so interested in my children. There were also a lot of people that I had met before but hadn't seen in a while, like my mom's cousins. I ended up spending most of my time outside with Xander. He hadn't had a nap, so he didn't have a lot of patience for being polite. That was our mistake, but he was fine. A dog wandered over and nuzzled the kids, so I got some pictures of that even as I was getting over there to get him away from them. I don't trust strange dogs. There was another boy there that played with Xander and the miniature John Deere equipment that Xander had brought with him (loaners from my mom's cousin Susie).

My great-aunt had requested a shiny red Corvette for her 80th birthday, so my mom's cousin Tony arranged to borrow it to chauffeur her home in after the party. So cute!

After the party, we went home and put a very tired Xander to bed, then headed out (with sleeping Xander in his car seat) to Susie and Roger's house for a wonderful bonfire. I think I had the best smore I'd ever had, that night. It was so nice to sit and chat quietly for hours. Such nice people.

Sunday, October 8 - whites2
Monday, October 9 - whites: Sullivan - Monday

On Monday morning, we all met at The Spot for breakfast. We had a lot of people in our party! Kayli ended up wandering around outside with Melissa for most of the meal. She was a little tired of eating out, I think! After breakfast, my dad took Xander around the Sullivan square, and they threw pennies in the fountain. Xander loved that!

Rebecca, Melissa, Jeff, and my dad had to leave early, but my mom and I took the kids over to Susie and Roger's house just to chat. Roger took Xander on several more farm machines, including another ride on the auger wagon to catch the beans. Wow, Roger is his hero, I think. We moved inside to escape the heat (in October? yes!). It was so nice to have some quiet time to just chat with our relatives. Eventually we couldn't deny that it was nap time for both kids, and thus the perfect time to leave. We were sad.

Both kids crashed in the car and barely stirred for hours. We decided to get them out of the car at a park we found by leaving the highway and driving around essentially aimlessly. It was a beautiful playgroup at an elementary school, but it was so hot that we couldn't stand it. We stayed only a short while before getting back on the road.

Tuesday, October 10 - whites: Preschool with Grandma
Grandma went to school with Xander and stayed there all morning. She liked the teachers and thinks that it is a good place for Xander. He had a great time showing her around!
Wednesday, October 11 - moonbeams: Nicole M's Baby Shower
Nicole's second baby, Elijah, is due next week, so we held a baby shower to welcome him. Nicole is very organized and actually has everything she needs already, but people still found fun and useful gifts to give to her. This was the first of our attempts to find a non-preschool time to have playgroup. It was fun, but the kids were a little crazy because it was naptime. Also, we miss our Megan and Susan! They were two people who never missed playgroup, so it feels a little empty without them.
Thursday, October 12 - dooms: Visiting Dooms
I wanted to see the Dooms while I was up here, and luckily, they were available when I called when we were done at the storage unit. I said, "I'll be there in an hour!" We got there in time for dinner, then we had an entire evening just to spend time with them. It was wonderful! We all stayed the night, and it was nice to spend time there when there weren't a hundred other people there. Summer is often busy out at the lake!
Thursday, October 12 - whites: Church in Jackson

I wanted to go to the storage unit to look at my grandparents' things before they went to auction, so my mom took the kids and played at my grandparents' church. The lady there was so welcoming and nice! She said, "This is your church, too. We'd love to have your grandchildren here to play." They had a great time.

I took a few pictures of the church, as well as pictures of the range that my dad and his sisters donated to the church in my grandparents' memory.

Friday, October 13 - birthday: Kayli's 11-month Birthday!
Kayli is 11-months old today! Read all about her and see the best pictures from the past month on her October Monthly Update!
Friday, October 13 - dooms: Playing at the Dooms'

We had a wonderful morning at the Dooms'. Papa took Xander out to the workshop and they made a birdhouse for me. It is beautiful, and Xander helped build the entire thing! He used a nail gun, and several other equipment that I'm probably glad I missed. My little baby is growing up to use power tools!

Xander wanted to have a pillow fight, so he got one, lucky boy. Kayli wanted to play, too. She laughed when Grams hit her (gently) with the pillow.

Friday, October 13 - whites: Back at the Whites'
We got back to my parents' house right after nap time (as in, naptime was in the car). We had a quiet evening at home. Well, as quiet as it can be with a 3.5 year old and an 11-month old.
Saturday, October 14 - angela: Visiting Angela

We managed to get to Rochester an hour early for Lizzie's shower, which gave my aunt and I just enough time to visit Angela and her family. We would have loved to stay longer, but at least we got a few minutes to chat and a chance to see them all and their new kitchen! It isn't done yet, but it is going to be lovely. Very beautiful, and everything looks to be very high quality, too!

Shannon was dancing around the entire time; it is possible that she is as exuberant as Xander is. She was singing along with the music (Laura Buckner?) very well and seems so grown up! Amanda was so very cute, and definitely wants to play like a big kid. Little Kayli seemed so uncommunicative in comparison!

Saturday, October 14 - whites: Lizzie's Wedding Shower
Lizzie Mattick is a childhood friend of mine, and she is getting married on the same date on which we got married! I am so glad that I was able to make it to her shower, and must thank my dad for playing with Xander all day, and my aunt for playing with Kayli all day (at the country club). I couldn't have been there if you both hadn't helped so much! Thank you!
Sunday, October 15 - whites: Apple Orchard!
I love apple orchards, particularly the cold cider and hot fresh doughnuts. Ohio has a dearth of cider mills, and the ones that there are don't have any doughnuts! What is cider without doughnuts? So, I really wanted to go to a proper cider mill while I was up in Michigan. We did and it was great! The cider was so yummy and the doughnuts were indescribably delicious - hot and greasy and cinnamon-y. Mmmm. Oh yeah, we picked some apples and found some pumpkins, too, but for me it was all about the doughnuts and cider!
Wednesday, October 18: Xenia Park with Delia, Connor, and Kyle
Despite the cold and damp weather, we had a great time at the park with Delia, Connor, and Kyle. Xander loves to climb trees these days, so there are a lot of pictures of that. Kayli still loves swings.
Saturday, October 21: King's Island
Xander and I went to King's Island all by ourselves! It was very busy there, but we still enjoyed ourselves. It was just nice to be able to pick Xander up to chat with him, or to easily crouch down to chat with him, with no Kayli between us. My favorite ride was the (stupidly named) Fairly Odd Coaster. It is almost a real roller coaster! I can't wait until Xander is old enough to ride the Beast with me. We're going to have so much fun! We were away for ten hours, but Kayli did fine with Travis. She wasn't even that excited to see me when I got home. I guess she's not nursing much anymore! She actually ate food with Travis because I didn't leave any milk, so she's growing up. We eventually left King's Island because it was getting dark and the Fear Fest monsters were starting to wander the streets, and Xander found that to be just a little too "mooky".
Sunday, October 22 - holly: Holly and Tom's Pumpkin Party!
I left the kids at home and went to Holly and Tom's for their annual Pumpkin Carving party. I didn't carve one, myself, because Xander doesn't like jack-o-lanterns (too mooky), so I just socialized, ate, and admired the creative pumpkins that people designed. Very impressive!
Tuesday, October 24: Jen's Winter Coat Options
I took these pictures so I could compare how the three different coats (and my old coat - last) look. I decided to keep the pink one, because I got it on clearance and it is the warmest. It is still pink, but my wonderful husband said, "Well, it's pink, but somehow you make it work." What a nice guy.
Thursday, October 26 - whites: Surprise Visit from Grandpa!
My dad showed up unexpectedly for a quick visit after picking up a car in Xenia. I love his driving job! Xander had stayed home from school because he had a runny nose, so he was here when Grandpa arrived. I love it when Xander runs to answer the door and yells in disbelief, "It's Grandpa!" We had a nice lunch together, then he had to get on the road.
Friday, October 27
Saturday, October 28: Halloween Pumpkins
Xander doesn't like jack-o-lanterns, as I said, because he thinks they are "mooky" (spooky). Holly loaned us these cool Mr. Potato Head type of pumpkin decorations, and Xander had SUCH a good time with those. He did them all by himself. Didn't they turn out great?
Saturday, October 28 - house: More Landscaping
Yes, I'm still working outside. Almost done, though! The three cubic yards of mulch that I had delivered is diminishing, though it is still larger than I'd expected. Everything is done except for mulching the bed on the complete opposite side of the house. I should be able to get it all done this week, before it gets really cold.
Sunday, October 29: Early Thanksgiving Dinner
Holly had a small turkey sitting around in her deep freeze, so she suggested that we have an early Thanksgiving dinner. Yum! We had mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, rolls, turkey, and hot cider. For dessert we had chocolate cake. Everything was delicious, and even if the kids were not perfectly behaved and calm, at least we got to spend some time together with the Raymers and the Underwoods. The cute Halloween outfits that Kyle and Kayli are wearing were surprise Halloween gifts from my aunt Kathi. Aren't they cute?
Monday, October 30: MiniUniversity Visit to Mrs. FlutterButter
Xander's school was invited to WSU's library to visit Mrs. FlutterButter. We went and watched her read several Halloween stories, then went downstairs for some healthy trick or treating. Xander liked seeing his class on a non-school day, and thought he was pretty special because he was there with his mom. How nice for me! It was a beautiful day, so we walked across campus and visited Travis in his office. Xander liked to see where Travis works.
Tuesday, October 31 - whites: Halloween!
The kids went out trick or treating for Halloween with me and my mom. Kayli rode in the sling for the trick or treating part. Xander jumped in the stroller in between houses. We hit nearly every house in the neighborhood. Xander had a great time, for most of it. We ran around with a Bunko friend, Heather, so Xander and Josh ran from house to house together. That would have been fine, except that they BOTH wanted to ring the doorbell, and Josh was a little older/faster than Xander. Xander had a slight tantrum at that point, but did NOT hit Josh, so that was a breakthrough, I think. Kayli thought the entire thing was a little dull, but she was so cute in her Piglet costume! She liked digging through the candy afterwards, too.
